Iran says navy mounts new defense system on warship

DUBAI (Reuters) - Iran’s navy has mounted a locally built advanced defensive weapons system on one of its warships for the first time, the Iranian navy chief was quoted as saying on Saturday, as tensions mount with the U.S. military in the Gulf.

Iran’s Revolutionary Guards confirmed earlier this month it held war games in the Gulf, saying they were aimed at “confronting possible threats” by enemies.

The U.S. military’s Central Command confirmed it had seen increased Iranian naval activity, extending to the Strait of Hormuz, a strategic waterway for oil shipments the Revolutionary Guards have threatened to block.

Iran has been furious over U.S. President Donald Trump’s decision to pull out of an international agreement on Iran’s nuclear program and re-impose sanctions on Tehran.

Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi “reiterated that coastal and sea testing of the short range defense Kamand system were concluded successfully, and said this system was mounted ... on a warship and will be mounted on a second ship soon,” the semi-official Tasnim news agency reported,

The Kamand has been dubbed the “Iranian Phalanx” after an automated machinegun produced by U.S. firm Raytheon whose heavy bullets shred incoming missiles.

Yes,and it only took 20 odd years to do as well... Rolleyes Exclamation
Who ever is in charge of naval procurement should be shot with a ciws for such an idiotic oversight, frankly there is NO excuse for this sort of thing, its literally the equivalent of sending a naval vessel to sea without radar or life jackets/rafts or ammunition.
Perhaps with this "success" we may soon see things like a naval vls wth a decent number of modern naval sams carried perhaps with a mixture of dual use anti ship/land attack weapons carried as well........,hey I`m allowed to dream, right?

We are becoming another North Korea minus nukes. If current policies keep on being practiced, we will be doomed.

Its finally been fitted after god knows how many years. These ships should never have even been commissioned without these systems being fitted.

Given that the CIWS needs a large mounting structure, I don't think it will be fitted to the Jamaran or any of the Alvand class. I reckon it will also be fitted to the new Damavand, which is currently under construction.
