Greetings from Greece!

This is my first post in here.

I'm fan of Iranian armed forces and i like Iranians as a people.

I'm looking forward to learn more things about Iranian military strenght and expressing some of my ideas respectively.

Could anyone solve me a question? Why the old good Iranian Gendarmerie was abolished and merged into National Police? I think that a security force like her, based on the form and shape of Turkish Gendarmerie, could be better for encountering Iranian domestic threats, while playing a might crucial role in national security/national defence.

Welcome to the forum! Smile

Iran has the Basij as a paramilitary/policing force that is kind of analogous to the role of the old Iranian Gendarmerie.

I think that Basij is a kind of militia/civilian guard/People's Defence made force that combines both internal and external security/defence duties and functions comprised by civilians.

It's rather the Iranian equilvement of Nazi German Volkssturm.

A fictional Iranian Gendarmerie on the other hand, would be a purely professional force, far more capable of executing paramilitary operations.

Of course i may be wrong.

Well there are different levels of participation of Basij, some are full time paramilitary whilst most are just loosely affiliated and serve no military function.

The old Iranian Gendarmerie was also a paramilitary group, so there are no huge distinctions between these groups sometimes and that's why I say the basij can fill that role instead. Even the IRGC was initially a kind of national militia for domestic purposes to protect the revolution, but now of course their functions have grown a lot.
