Israel-Palestine Conflict
#1
Thread to discuss the Israel-Palestine conflict (including Gaza + the West Bank).

US/Trump "Deal of The Century" Peace Plan for Israel-Palestine:

This peace plan is led by Jared Kushner (rabid Zionist with direct economic ties to illegal Jewish settlements in occupied Palestinian land). Thus, it is from the outset an extremely pro-Israel plan.

The plan is split into two parts: (I) the economic portion and (II) the political portion. The economic part was released in June 2019, whilst the political portion (i.e. the important part) has not yet been released (scheduled for release in November 2019).

The key issues (status of Jerusalem, statehood, contiguity of Palestinian land, illegal Jewish settlements, right of return for Palestinian refugees, etc) are all "political" thus this can has been kicked down the road so to speak.

The economic portion was discussed at a conference in Bahrain in June (boycotted by Palestinians and Israelis), so we will discuss that.

(I) The Economic Portion - "Peace to Prosperity":

In a nutshell, trying to buy the Palestinians. Trump/Kushner are real estate agents, so they approach this issue from a fundamentally flawed perspective; thinking that you can attach a monetary value to anything.

More specifically, the economic portion calls for a $50 billion investment fund to be spent on 179 development projects. The biggest such projects include a plan to link the West Bank to Gaza with a high-speed railway line and a new global university.

This $50 billion would be broken down into $26 billion in loans, $13.5 billion in grants and $11 billion in private investment.

However, only half of this $50 billion is to be spent in the West Bank and Gaza. The rest would be split across Egypt, Jordan and Lebanon - improving conditions for Palestinian refugees in those countries. This is a major red flag.

Main issues:

- Funding: the US wants most of the $50 billion to come from their Persian Gulf Arab client states. However, is not clear how this would be realised in practice, given a disappointing reception to this deal in the region. In reality, the US would have to fund the bulk of this number.

- No mention of the word "Palestine" in the entire 40 page document. No mention of the "two-state solution" either. This clearly indicates that there is no plan for an independent Palestinian State.

- The fact that half of the $50 billion fund is planned to be spent in neighbouring countries that host Palestinian refugees strongly suggests no recognition of the Palestinian right of return (i.e. focus on integrating them into neighbouring countries rather than recognising their right to return to their homeland - to preserve a Jewish majority).

- Jerusalem is not mentioned at all. Specifically, no mention of any development projects for Palestinian East-Jerusalem. This suggests a recognition of full Israeli Jewish annexation of all of Jerusalem is part of this "peace plan".

In sum, this is a conflict about land and rights, not economics. Hence, this peace plan is 'dead on arrival'.

Latest news (25th August) is that a cell in Gaza launched at least 5 rockets at Sderot/south Israel. Hamas had warned of a reaction to Israel's explosive drone attack in Beirut.

Rocket alarms were triggered across south Israel. According to official Israeli statements, 3 rockets were launched from Gaza at Sderot (during a music concert).

Two were intercepted by the Iron Dome system whilst another was reported to have caused a small fire just outside Sderot.

Videos from the scene show mass panic as the concert-goers run to safety. Also show two rockets being intercepted. Impact with a building can also be seen, which some are saying was shrapnel from an Iron Dome missile.

US Middle East peace envoy Jason Greenblatt (co-architect of Israel/Palestine Peace Plan) Resigns

"US Middle East peace envoy Jason Greenblatt, who has spent the last years attempting to cobble together a long-awaited Israeli-Palestinian peace plan, will step down after the release of the administration’s program, the White House announced Thursday.

The plan is expected to be released soon after Israeli elections on September 17.

Greenblatt, a former lawyer with the Trump Organization, has been working for the last two and a half years on the administration’s peace plan together with the president’s son-in-law and senior assistant Jared Kushner. He will be replaced by Avi Berkowitz, a senior aide to Kushner who has been present in many of the meetings and discussions related to the peace proposal.

Referring to the plan, the senior official said that “the vision is now complete and will be released when appropriate"

"The Palestinian Hamas resistance movement has shot down an Israeli drone in the Gaza Strip, a day after the regime carried out a fresh wave of air raids against the besieged coastal enclave.

Palestinian media reported that Hamas resistance fighters intercepted and downed the quadcopter drone east of Rafah in southern Gaza Strip on Monday night.

The Israeli military has confirmed that a drone fell in southern Gaza Strip, saying that an investigation into the incident is underway.

The aircraft’s remains are now in the hands of the resistance fighters, according to media reports.

This is the second unmanned aerial vehicle the Israeli army has lost over the past 24 hours.

The Lebanese resistance movement Hezbollah said its air defense forces had shot down an Israeli military drone outside the southern town of Ramyah early Monday, amid heightened tensions between the group and the Israeli military."
