Analysis: Saudi Arabian Air and Missile Defences - AmirPatriot - 05-16-2019

In a time of high tensions, Saudi Arabia's air defences are at their weakest in decades.

Iran's future with Saudi Arabia is uncertain, but one thing we know for sure is that it's not friendly. I've talked extensively about Iran's ability to defend against Saudi Arabia, but with the Kingdom buying a large force of THAAD and PAC-3 interceptors, it is necessary to discuss the Saudis' ability to defend as well. I touched on Saudi air defences briefly in a [url=https://irangeomil.blogspot.com/2017/11/irans-military-posture-needs-update.html]previous blog post
, but I have decided to go into the subject in more detail. Indeed, I will go into more detail than I did for the Iranian air defences. OPSEC for the Saudis does not concern me.

Informative post thanks

2 points

1. Before going to Saudi Arabia's air defence capabilities isn't it better to analysis their radars's coverage ?

2.How do u see SA's massive air power role in air defence vs Iranian and/or Yemeni ballistic missiles ?

1. They have such a strong radar coverage including AWACS that I think their whole country is probably covered and it's unnecessary to do a blog post on it.

2. KSA's air power has no anti-ballistic capability.

I think its safe to say if U.S has the capability then Israel will get it and after a couple of years S.A will get it too .when it comes to SA we are talking about trillion dollars worth of oil reserves so everything is economical for them ! keeping 6-12 airplanes in air for 24/7 is really has no cost for them vs threat of missile attacks on their oil infrastructures.

"An Air Launched Hit-to-Kill ballistic missile defense system has been proposed that would enable U.S. Air Force Boeing-McDonnell Douglas F-15C Eagle fighters to carry the Patriot Advanced Capability Three missile for both boost-phase and terminal-phase interception missions."

The operating concept for the Network Centric Airborne Defense Element envisions using the host aircraft to do much of the lifting required to position the interceptor for attack, which is why a relatively small missile can be adapted to the mission.

Once aircraft sensors lock onto the target missile and sufficient proximity is achieved, the NCADE interceptor is released at high altitude. It maintains a digital link with the host aircraft en route to the target, which is then acquired by the interceptor itself using an infrared seeker in its nose adapted from the Sidewinder air-to-air missile.

Pentagon considers an ICBM-killing weapon for the F-35, but is it affordable?

WASHINGTON — Over the next six months, the Defense Department will weigh whether to develop a new weapon for the F-35 fighter jet that will enable it to strike down an intercontinental ballistic missile in the early stages of flight.

"For certain regional geographies — North Korea comes to mind — we actually think it’s entirely possible and cost-effective to deploy what I will loosely call air-to-air interceptors, although possibly of new design, on advanced aircraft [and] using the aircraft as either sensor or weapons platforms to affect a missile intercept,” said Mike Griffin, undersecretary of defense for research and engineering.

Thanks Amir, great overview!

Pretty incredible that so many sights are only protected by Hawk batteries... But THAAD and PAC-3 will make a big difference for the picture in the coming years.
